I’m thinking of a temporary relocation for 2 weeks starting the last week of July and would like your thoughts Oppo.
The tentative plan is to load up the sportwagen and leave here (St Louis) on July 24th and head west ultimately driving to the SF Bay Area Sunday mid-day . Right now this feels safer than flying and while it costs me a few days each way is cheaper too.
Accommodations during the travel portion would likely be me sleeping in my car or a tent at a rest area or other public land. Food would be eaten out of a cooler in the back of the car as well. The sportwagen also is an amazing road trip car getting 45 mpg with the cruise set at 85.
Can’t believe it has been almost a year since my last road trip!
I’m working from home now and plan on doing the same there during the day with the evening left open to explore a bit. The thought here for lodging in the area
is probably an AirBnB with a dedicated space with bathroom or
maybe an extended stay hotel.
There i s a practical purpose for this trip, it’s maybe 20% to take a break from the monotony of the last several months and the rest of the 80% is to explore the area (safely) a good deal. The Mrs and I are planning on moving out there in the next 6 months and while we’ve been to several places in the area don’t know it quite well enough to be comfortable picking an area we want to live in yet.
Mrs Miner hasn’t decided if she’ll come with me or not yet. Boarding the pets would get pretty expensive for that long if we could even find a place to take a large dog and 2 cats. We called a few places already and their answer was either ‘ no’ or ‘it’ll be $2500 for that’.
Disclaimer - I have been and will continue to wear a face mask when around anyone I don’t live with and follow all other guidelines on social distancing.
So thoughts are requested my fellow Opponauts - a m I crazy for thinking of doing this right now?

I have nothing to contribute other than a chip tuned diesel Alltrack would be radical.
Also, I’d hold off on a moving scouting trip for the time being.

I’ve been waiting for the CPO warranty on it to expire before I explore chip options. I also really wish they made a TDI alltrack, but for now I love my TDI sportwagen. I do have some taller springs in the garage waiting to go on my sportwagen too...
I’m definitely on the fence about the trip though.

Look up Kimpton hotels. They allow dogs and are everywhere. I’ve stayed in them with biggish pitbulls with no issues.

She’s a 120# newfoundland that doesn’t love to travel anymore now that she’s 10 years old.
It’s more the cats that are the problem getting boarded though. We can leave them alone at home for a few days but anymore than that and they’ll need to be fed, watered and litter boxes changed.

With numbers in CA rising be mindful of the risks and also potential scaling back of reopening. Depends on the type of exploring you intend to do I guess. Plenty of great nature and open spaces to explore and get to know the area without being stuck in the cities.
Also for your drive over, and perhaps even in the Bay Area, if you’re into camping check out Hipcamp. Pretty much same concept as AirBnB but for campsites. Especially with public campgrounds either closed or super packed if they’re open it’s a decent option. We just made some bookings for the summer, including a solo campsite (i.e. no other campers) by a private lake in a vineyard. Can’t get any more socially isolated than that, and still a great adventure to break up the monotony.

Thanks for the tip on hipcamp - I will definitely give that a look.
If numbers start to rise drastically and things close again the trip will likely be called off. I’m not planning on doing much indoors exploring outside of possibly a few apartment complex tours . More to get a better feel of the areas we’d like to move as it’s hard to do from Google Maps alone.
I’m going to be WFH through the end of the year anyway so this feels like a pretty cost effective way of taking a vacation while still working and doing some needed scouting.

DO IT.
We just took a trip to northern NM, stayed in an AirBNB, and spent 90% of our time outside our rental... outside.

Extra litterbox(es), auto-feeders & waterers?
Or pay someone to go by every few
days
and clean up, fill up, and spend some time with them?

The news this weekend got bad again making me even more nervous about this trip. At this point we’re at a wait and see I think. If everything calms down this week it’s back to a solid probably.

Also I’ve always wanted to go to NM but haven’t done it yet. You’ll have to share some pics of the j ourney!

Hope it works for you all to go. You won’t regret it.

That looks like a dangerous animal.

Lol - she’s a giant sweetheart almost all of the time. Unless she feels something is threatening us and then her herding instincts turn on and she barks great big, her hair puffs, bares her teeth and scares the hell out of whatever she’s pointed at. She also even that large has a hell of a puppy dog look that’ll convince you to give her whatever she wants.
She’s been a very good dog

Yep if you’re a delivery man with a treat she’ll be your friend forever. She loves our regular UPS guy and the recycle man as they both bring her treats at least a couple times a month.
When she was young she was a hell of a jumper and I had to put in a 5' fence to keep her in.
Just replied back to you - thanks for reaching out!
